The time has finally come to retire the VESI (Virtualization Ecoshell) and install the latest PowerGUI (v2.3.0). I’ve known for a while now that the VESI’s functionality was being merged back into PowerGUI. I’ve been putting it off for a bit while waiting for the VMware PowerPack to be updated for PowerCLI 4.1. Well, today is the day. (Or, rather, last week was the day.)
Kirk Munro announced last Monday that the VMware PowerPack has been upgraded to PowerCLI 4.0U1, and a beta has been released for PowerCLI 4.1 support. He also states on his blog that the version of the PowerPack for PowerCLI 4.0U1 is the version that ships with PowerGUI 2.3. So, if you’re thinking about taking the plunge back to PowerGUI (as I have) and you’re running PowerCLI 4.1, then you’ll need to follow these simple instructions:
- Uninstall the VESI
- Download the latest PowerGUI
- Install the PowerGUI. Don’t select the VMware PowerPack or vCenter integration
- Allow the install to complete
- Download the VMware PowerPack 4.1 beta (Downloads box on VMware PowerPack page)
- Launch PowerGUI. Go to File > PowerPack Management and import the 4.1 PowerPack
- Enjoy the awesomeness of PowerCLI 4.1 & PowerGUI
