One of the best things about VMware is that, if everything is setup correctly, a cluster can experience a host failure or a host isolation with very little impact to the guests within that cluster. However, as nice as it is to experience a failure and not get paged at 3AM, it helps to know what failed and when. By default, VMware vCenter 4.1 doesn’t ship with any HA alarms. Let’s take a minute to get one setup.

Fun with NetApp: PowerShell
I finally got an opportunity to mess around with the PowerShell cmdlets for NetApp. Overall, I think that a storage vendor’s adoption of something like PowerShell is always a Good Thing. (From what I understand, EMC has PowerShell cmdlets out now, as well — but I digress.)
There were a couple of things that I wanted to use PowerShell for — basically, “quicklook” kind of information. Sure, I could use NetApp’s System Manager, or FilerView, or DataFabric Manager, etc – but all of those require time to load and sort through, etc. The cmdlets, when structured properly, can aggregate a great deal of information into a short & actionable list.

iTunes error 5002: iTunes
So this isn’t the usual type of thing that I like to write about, but I’m a huge fan of making knowledge publicly available, so here goes.
Recently I changed the email address on my iTunes account. After that happened, and after I’d verified, I wasn’t able to sign into iTunes. I kept receiving an error message saying that my email address wasn’t verified, and to click OK for instructions (which never happened). After clicking OK, I’d get another iTunes error message, 5002, saying the store was unavailable. This was really weird to me because I could still buy & download application updates via my iPhone (same iTunes account) but not thru iTunes itself.

Using apt-get through a proxy: Ubuntu
Wanted to post this more for my edification than anything else, but perhaps someone will make some use of it.
If you need to use apt-get behind a proxy, put this little script in your .bashrc file.
